Is psychotherapy a form of medical treatment?

I am in a middle of a family situation with my wife being nervous about our children and the different ideas of how to bring them up. Family counseling is what was proposed to me, and I agree but am anxious to find if it is a form of medical treatment that can bring results?

Do not be afraid to try it out, because the people who do counseling are all professionaly trained. You only have to decide who do you need for that counseling, psychologist, psychiatrist, psychotherapist, social worker, marriage and family therapist? Some of them are allowed to prescribe medication while others are not.
