Hello! My father has glaucoma. He has been using eye drops prescribed by his doctor for some time now. He goes to check his eyes regularly but the results are not as he expected. His doctor recommended surgery since he didn’t respond well to the medications. His doctor didn’t give him any more specific information and we know very little about the surgery. Is surgery an option for glaucoma?

Hello! Surgery is an option and can help lowering intraocular pressure when medications are not sufficient. It cannot reverse vision loss. There are two types of surgery: laser treatment or filtering microsurgery (making a cut in the eye to reduce the pressure). The type of surgery depends on severity of glaucoma and general health condition. Most doctors recommend laser surgery before filtering surgery, of course if the pressure is not extremely high or the optic nerve is not seriously damaged.
