Is there a drug that could help eith severe emphysema?

Hello! My grandfather suffers from emphysema. His condition has become worse then ever. He didn’t want to seek for medical help till recently when his lips became blue and he was struggling to exhale. His doctor prescribed oxygen and I would like to know is there a drug that could help with severe emphysema?

Hello! The treatment of emphysema always depends on severity of the patient’s condition. The first step is of course quitting smoking. Bronchodilatators are usually the first medications that doctors prescribe for emphysema. In mild cases bronchodilators may be used as needed. Steroid medications are also used to decrease the inflammation but not all patients respond to these drugs. Antibiotic are also used sometimes since it is suspected that infection may play important role in an acute bout of emphysema. If your father condition is getting worse you should report it to his doctor and he will find the way to relieve his symptoms.
