Is urinary tract infection common in infants?

Hello! My sister has a six months old daughter. She is very sweet and we all like her very much. She has never been ill till two days ago when she suddenly got fever. The fever was really high and we took her to the hospital and her doctor said it was most probably urinary tract infection. He sent off her urine to the laboratory and the results proved his opinion. Is urinary tract infection common in infants?

Hello! It is always difficult to make the diagnosis in infants. They can not tell us anything and they usually have non-specific symptoms, including unexplained fever, vomiting and irritability. Urinary tract infections are especially common in their first year and usually happen in one or two out of 100 infants. Boys are at higher risk in the first year and UTI becomes more common in girls that in boys after the first year. If the child is born prematurely the risk is also higher. Taking lot of fluid is essential for UTI.
