In terms of weight loss potential, yes, Adderall does have that effect for many people. In fact, Adderall was formerly sold under the brand name Obetrol back in the 1960's for use as an anorectic - or, appetite supressant. But now, its primary usage is to treat individuals with ADD/ADHD, and is rarely prescribed for weight loss. There are plenty of other drugs available for weight loss which don't have as many side effects as Adderall can cause.
My experience with Adderall - at first - I got the feeling of not being hungry most of the time, and therefore losing weight as a result. But, that tapered off after some time of being on it. My normal appetite returned after maybe a year or so. This is only my experience with it. It could be totally different for other people taking it. I have read a lot posts on various forums about Adderall, and one thing is certain: It can have many different effects for many different people. It can be very effective when taken as prescribed, and at the lowest possible dose which will also give the maximum therapeutic benefits. Its just a matter of finding the 'right' dosage, which can be a bit tricky, but eventually it works out.

After many years struggling with being overly hyper, the inability to sustain any decent long term relationship romantically and friendly, being misdiagnosed and feeling like my mind was on a rollercoaster and my body was standing at the concession stand, I was told I have ADHD and it was amazing I was never told this before. Upon this diagnosis I was prescribed Adderall 20 mg for the morning and 5 mg for later on in the day. I wasn't completely sure of the side effects and never really knew that it was the same thing people in school use to talk about when they wanted to loose weight. I will admit I have lost a lot of weight on the drug, but the side effects plus the reason the medicine is suppose to be used for I would NEVER use it for this reason. The normal side effects for people with ADHD taking Adderall that personally suck for me is extreme headaches & dry mouth. But most importantly, people have to understand that ADHD is a very bizarre disorder and if you are taking a drug that treats this disorder but you do not have it....how do you not realize that you are royally screwing yourself up? As an example:
Me personally, this was my life as a non-medicated person: I usually had a hard time waking up because at night I couldn't go to sleep; my brain would run laps of information through my head constantly, I would sit up and think about everything all the time any time. I would finally fall asleep at about 2 then wake up a few hours later wide awake and ready to go, so I would have to get up and read, take a shower or something to go back to sleep, by that time I only had an hour or two before I had to get up for school or work. I was constantly late to everything, people started to either not invite me to events that required promptness or they lie about the time so I would hopefully show up. I would have about 10 projects going at a time and could never answer my boss fully on how I was coming a long on any of them. I had to work full time, go to school full time, do volunteer work or baby sit or clean or something to keep myself busy because I couldn't stay still. People hated going out with me because I was never tired and never ready to leave. I would do stuff on a whim and then when I would finally think about it I would be so upset with the situation that I would go into anxiety mode. I would literally run my body down until it would basically fail on me by either extreme sickness or severe stomach problems. My brain constantly said, "Come on you can do it all, you don't need to sleep!" It's like my body had no say in the matter. I also was very excessive and couldn't ever budget myself or control myself when it came to specific things, I drank to blackout, I shopped like I had money, I said yes to every one like I was a million people in one. Nothing was ever enough, I always felt like there had to be more. I talked, worked, did things and thought at 100 miles an hour, there was no such thing as clam, relaxed and content.
I know this is long but the point is, that Adderall helped control all these behaviors; by taking a medication strong enough to do that IS NOT HEALTHY OR GOOD FOR YOUR MIND OR BODY if ADHD is not the reason you are taking Adderall. Please think about what you are doing...

I see a lot of self-righteousness in some of the posts and would like to add my personal experience to balance things out.

Adderall is a drug. Alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine are all drugs. Just like any other drug, it can have significant negative consequences, or it can enhance your life considerably. The key is to be responsible, and to stop once you achieved your goals.

I was prescribed 20 mg of Adderall for weight loss by the family doctor about a year ago. I weighed 290 lbs and I'm 6'4 tall. 3 months ago I reached my weight-goal of 210 lbs and stopped taking it. Since then, I regained my appetite and had to adapt to controlling my urges naturally without the drug. I've gained 4 pounds in the first month but seem to have it under control now (I weigh 213 at the moment).

Here are the pros and cons from my experience, and the experience of others I know.

Cons:

1. Insomnia. Make sure you take the drug early in the day. I have had many 2 and 3 hour night because of taking it too late (6 hours before going to bed for an example). While the effect should only last 4 to 5 hours, it can keep you up much longer. I do not seem to have trouble when taking it 10 or more hours prior to going to bed.

2. Mood swings. Adderall will most likely make you happy. I tend to get a "oh isn't the world wonderful" kind of an attitude when I take it. While this may sound like a pro, I do not think it is. For one it is unnatural. Also, your newly-found sentimentality means every little thing will offend you. You can be happy one moment, then the most minor of things will tick you off and ruin your day. Get used to it, and try to control your emotions.

3. Addiction. You will get used to being on the drug, and you will feel out of sync on the days you do not take it. This usually pushes people to continue taking it for as long as they can. It can lead to try other stimulants like Meth or Cocaine. Please don't. Adderall will most likely cause some neurological effects in the long run. I do not have personal experience with that, but it is just simple logic. Take it while you need it, stop when you're done.

Pros:

1. Appetite suppression. And i mean major appetite suppression. At first, I could go on the whole day without eating and would not miss it. I tried not to do that as I know it is unhealthy. I felt the appetite suppression was great as it enabled me to have complete control over my eating habits. I would make sure that I ate 1500-2000 calories every day, and that I had enough exercise. Do not kill yourself to lose weight. You'll just gain it all back once you stop. Develop healthy eating habits and stick to them.

2. Increased energy. I can exercise like a madman when on Adderall. It makes exercise exciting and worthwhile. Make sure you do get some exercise when you're trying to lose weight.

3. Increased focus. I was going to school while taking Adderall, and I never felt it helped me study. Ive always been quite capable of studying, and Adderall didn't change that. I was a good student before and after Adderall. I know a lot of people who take it to study, and it seem to help them quite a bit. It did help me with work though. As a computer programmer I used to work about 6 hours before I'm completely exhausted. I could work for 12 hours straight while on Adderall and it truly increased my income. Smile

So know the facts and do some research before making a decision. But I can testify to the effectiveness of the drug.

Live responsibly.

Actually, it was originally used for weight loss. Adderall, or Obetrol, as it was originally called, was prescribed in the 60's for treating overweight.

It is not the right approach to losing weight, you should spend more calories and intake less, in order to stimulate burning of accumulated fats. I suggest you to start with mild exercise to stimulate cell metabolism, you will feel much better and all your efforts will pay of.

Gosh, you mean if people eat less and exercise more they'll lose weight? Wow! You've got to get the word out! There are so many overweight people out there that need to hear this. Maybe you should go on Oprah, or Dr. Phil.

Pardon my sarcasm, but it's not that easy. There are all kinds of physiological and psychological reasons why some people can't lose weight, and sometimes a medication can help. You wouldn't say that someone with clinical depression just needs to cheer up, or that a schizophrenic just needs to get a grip, would you?

Sure, there are risks involved in taking medications, but let's not lose sight of the fact that obesity is a risk factor in heart disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, stroke, sleep apnea, gastroesophageal reflux disease, low self-esteem.... I could go on. Most people will probably find that if one medication makes them lose weight, they can throw out all the medications they were taking for all their secondary, overweight-induced illnesses.

I think it's time we started treating obesity as the disease that it is and get over the fact that just because certain people abuse certain drugs, it doesn't mean no one else should use them if it improves their overall health.

I really appreciate this post! My own personal thoughts on adderall is this: I have ADD and adderall does help me to concentrate better and focus and understand this better. As for weightloss, I really don't mind this particular side effect because I would like to lose weight, and I feel that it does help me focus better on dieting and exercising when I take it. I do believe that the side effects are different for everyone and not everyone exerperiences are the same on the medication. For instance I don't think that is drug is addictive for me. I usually can go verylong periods of time without taking it and don't experience a thing (except the ADD kicks in) but on the other hand when I do decide to take it, I experience terrible migranes (what is up with that?) and the dry mouth thing is kindof irritating as well. All in all I'm perfectly happy with the meds and I'm glad I have something that can help me focus better.

I've been on Adderall for several weeks now (to treat ADD) and it works miracles as far as my ability to organize and complete tasks, however, I haven't lost a pound! I was hoping for that side effect and still am. I'm on 40 mg a day (1 pill/2x/day). Does anybody have any insight for me?

By the way, I would not be taking this drug if I didn't have ADD because some of the side effects can be rather unpleasant.

Totally agree. And one more thing: DON'T DRINK COFFEE or other cafeinated beverages AFTER NOON!!!

ADD sufferers are particularly susceptible to this because most of us picked up the habit of using caffiene--or nicotine or other stimulants--when we wanted to concentrate on something or just feel less in a fog, particularly when attending parties, going on dates or other social functions. This is a habit that has to change. It is totally inappropriate when you're taking a powerful stimulant like Adderall or Dexedrine.

I made the mistake of drinking two iced coffees after dinner last night. I'm working on two hours of sleep right now. At least I got some work done last night though. Wink

I really disagree with this one. Maybe it's different for people who don't have ADD, but I feel better because I don't get mad at myself for missing appointments, forgetting to do things I've promised to people who love and depend on me. All that destructive, self-directed anger is gone!

I also feel good because of the way people compliment me on how much calmer I am, how much more focused I am, how well I follow through on my commitments, and how much better I look since I've lost the extra 60 pounds I was carrying around.

But I'm absolutely out-of-my-mind thrilled that if I stay on course and continue losing weight and exercising as I am, I am actually going to be able to go surfing again--something I used to absolutely love more than life itself, and something I thought was gone from my life forever until just recently.

If that sounds like a drug-induced euphoria, or some kind of "unnatural high," then I'd like to hear your definition of true happiness, because I'm very sure I've never experienced it.

By the way, you want to see mood swings? You should have seen me before I got my ADD treated.

When you have ADD you're never "done." If you stop taking your meds for just a day, the fog comes back. You become more irritable. You are so preoccupied with the uncontrollable thoughts swirling inside your brain that you appear to withdraw inside your own head. People start asking you what's wrong, and you either mutter something or snap at them, and you don't even know which it's going to be until it happens. ADD isn't fun.

I'd also like to point out that it's a well-known fact that ADD sufferers are far more likely to abuse drugs if we go untreated. We know something's wrong with us, and we'll do anything to get out of pain, whether it's taking stimulants to feel sharper or depressants to get numb. And we engage in all kinds of high risk behaviors. We drive fast, take risks and push everything to the hairy edge, because we like the adrenaline. We need the stimulation. It's the only way we feel really alive. We also work better under pressure, so we leave everything to the last minute in order to create pressure, which is real pleasant for the people who have to work with us, and of course we can't sustain that kind of energy for long, so every now and then we say "f--- it!" and throw in the towel, and somebody else usually gets to pick up the pieces. So would you rather see us living like that or popping an Adderall and curling up with a good book?

I remember asking myself, when I first started taking Adderall, what if it burns me out? What if my system just can't take it? Well, I can answer that now, and the answer is that if I have to choose between living for ten years the way I feel now and living for another 40 years in a fog, I'll take the ten, but frankly, I don't think I have to make that choice. My weight's down; my blood pressure is way down; my cholesterol is lower and I'm taking lower doses of the statin drug I've been on, and I'm making better choices about what I eat and how I live, so I might just go on for another 40 or 50 years like this.

You forgot to mention that constipation is one of the cons--until you learn to make better food choices. For me that has become easy now that I choose food for what it can do for me instead of how it will taste or how I think it will make me feel.

The thing that always made exercise hard for me had nothing to do with the pain. It was the boredom. Now I find I can stick to it, just like I can stick to any other task I choose to undertake.

One word of caution, though: I think it does elevate your pain threshold a little. I sometimes find myself exercising to the point of exhaustion at times, where I'll actually find it difficult to remain standing. I almost fell when I was running steps because my leg muscles just stopped responding before I felt really tired. I've had to learn how to anticipate exhaustion and stop pushing myself so hard.

I've found work a lot more enjoyable now that I can focus. I'm starting to complete projects I'd started and moved to the back burner. Strangely, my television consumption has dwindled to next to nothing. It's just so much less interesting than all the other things I can do now that I can focus. If I were a conspiracy theorist, I'd probably think that all the anti-drug propaganda out there is being promoted by the broadcasting and entertainment industry. Smile

Yes, research is the key. It is also important to work with a physician who monitors your progress, behaviorally and physiologically, and constantly checks for any signs of side-effects, addiction or other adverse reactions and who has the expertise to prescribe a different medication at the first sign of trouble. It is also important to have a friend, a spouse or other loved one who is close to you and knows your emotional history intimately, who can stay vigilant to any changes in your mood or temperament and alert you and/or your physician if they see any that are not positive.

This is pretty unusual. I have heard of people who've experienced weight loss with no improvement in attention disorders, but never the reverse!

I'm not sure what to suggest. Normally I recommend trying other medications (Dexedrine, Ritalin, Concerta or Focalin), but Adderall is the one that is most likely to cause weight loss. It still might be worth trying some of the others, but I am not too hopeful.

Perhaps you might respond to some counseling. My big issue was stress eating and other emotion-related eating, but this was pretty effectively resolved by getting rid of the source of my stress and self-directed anger: my ADD. You may have some other issues to work through.

Another possibility would be looking for signs of a metabolic disorder. Have you had any blood work done lately? Do you know what your TSH levels are like?

Good luck!

I am 18 years old, I was prescribed 40mg of Adderall XR per day right before my senior year in high school started. During the first three days of using it I lost about 15 pounds (granted, I had that much extra weight to lose). After a few months I had lost almost 60 pounds. I quit taking Adderall everyday because I did, and still do, hate the way it makes me feel but I am glad I took it because of the weight loss. In my opinion though, Adderall should never be used strictly for weight loss. It just happened to be a nice side effect for me.
