A new US study done on cognitive decline and its prevention showed that vegetables are primary brain foods and that it is vegetables and not fruits that could help in cognitive decline prevention in elderly people.

Why not fruits? The study showed no link between regular fruit consumption and memory loss prevention. The exact reasons are not known yet but it is thought that it is because vegetables contain high amounts of vitamin E, which helps lowers the risk of cognitive decline. Vegetables are most commonly eaten with added fats such as salad dressings that increase the absorption of vitamin E.

The study mentioned included 3718 senior citizens over a six-year period and followed their eating habits. It was noticed that people who ate at least 2.8 servings of vegetables a day saw their rate of cognitive change slow by 40 % compared to people who consumed less than one serving of vegetables a day.

You would not believe that this decrease was equivalent to about five years of younger age.

The older the person was, the greater impact eating a lot of vegetables had.

The researchers are planning on investigating this topic further in en effort to find the exact cause and to realize why fruits had no similar impact.
