Itching and swollen vaginal lips

when i am on my period i usually get a bit itchy on the inside and outside of my vagina, i am on at the moment and i am experiencing a lot of itchiness and now i've noticed that my vaginal lips and clitoris are swollen...what could this be and how can i treat it?
