Just been diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Hello! My grandfather has just been diagnosed a chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. He often coughs, wheezes and he is occasionally short of breath. We forced him to see his doctor and do all needed examinations. He had a chest X-ray and spirometric measurement and his doctor prescribed some antibiotics (for one week) and some medicines to inhale. Is there anything we could do at home to help him?

Hello! The most important issue for COPD is to stop smoking. You grandfather should avoid exposure to other airborne irritants and air pollution. You have to take care that no one smokes in his presence. Stopping smoking will lessens cough and slow the development of shortness of breath which will provide benefit for his health. Keep the house clean to avoid dust irritation. Influenza or pneumonia may worsen COPD and therefore he should receive an influenza vaccination every year and a pneumo-coccal vaccination every five to six years.
