Lymph nodes usually swell due to infections-both viral and bacterial but they could also swell due to allergic reactions, some kind of metabolic disease, hyperthyroid, arthritis, cancer, etc
Trivial (minor) infections could make lymph nodes swell and a person would feel the node in the area where infection occurred.
The size of a normal lymph node is around 1/2 inch across but if fighting an infection it may get twice as bigger and feel tender and warm. When the infection is gone, so is the lymph node although it may take a bit longer for a node to subside.
Whether you should have your swollen node checked or not depends on the underlying causes, accompanying symptoms, and the place where the node showed up. If the node doesn’t goes down in 4 weeks time, you should certainly have it checked.
