Certain types of children's candy contain lead but the allowed amount is being restricted by the FDA. The previous allowed amount was one-half a part per million of this highly toxic metal and the new recommended level will be one-tenth of a part per million.
This decision has been made after it was found that other ingredients like chili powder, tamarind pulp or some salts used in some sweets can boost the lead content beyond the levels allowed. Lead poisoning could cause behavioral problems and learning disabilities and in some cases even seizures or death. Children under age 7 are at highest risk because of their quick growth.
This new measure should even more reduce the risk from lead exposure in candies.
