Our 35 year old son was diagnosed with MD at 12, he has only been in the wheelchair about 7 or 8 years now but he has deteriorated quickly since then. He is at the point now where he is down (in bed) more than he is up. His shoulders and hips are subluxating, causing a great deal of pain for him. His neck and back are also causing problems as the disease progresses. There is not an MDA clinic within his tolerable travel range and our military doctors are basically saying they don't know what to do for him anymore.
We have asked many times if there are programs or grants available to help with making his bathroom accessible, especially the shower. He cannot get in and out of the tub without paying for it physically afterwards and I cannot help him very much in that regard (back issues), and his dad is currently stationed away from home until next summer. We don't have the money to renovate and with the current financial crisis we don't want to take out a loan unless we have no choice. We bought our hightop van and paid for the lift conversion and tie downs a few years ago when he couldn't transfer anymore, so our savings is depleted as well.
I am at a loss of what to do for him, what specialists to ask for etc so any help at all would be greatly appreciated!
