Babies born prematurely are usually battling a bunch of health problems and scientists managed to find another risk factor that contribute to premature delivery.
The risk of having a premature delivery was found to be up for women who decide to undergo LEEP procedure during their pregnancy. The surgery is widely used for eliminating precancerous cells on cervix and is also called loop incision.
By studying over 5000 women, the researchers realized that around 1,500 premature births could have been averted if loop incision was avoided.
The researchers suggest that laser ablation, another procedure done to eliminate precancerous cells on cervix was safer to undergo in pregnancy as this procedure hasn’t been connected with the risk of premature delivery.
They also said that women should be given all the information about the advantages and disadvantages of different forms of treatment, so that they could make informed decisions and enhance their chances of having successful pregnancies. |
