Lung Cancer And COPD

My mother is a smoker. She was diagnosed with COPD. Is it possible she develops lung cancer from it?

Hey there,
Yes it is possible to develop lung cancer from COPD. Besides both diseases have very similar symptoms, that is why early diagnosis of lung cancer is difficult.
However, I guess doctors told her she must stop smoking. Most lung cancer patients have COPD, because both conditions are caused by smoking. But, only 1 or 2 % of COPD patients will go on and develop lung cancer.
I cannot actually tell don’t worry, but situation is not that frightful as might seem at the beginning…
