About a month ago I had started taking a sulpha antibiotic for a bladder infection and broke out with hives a few hours after. I have lupus for 3 years now, but
I have been in remission almost a year and have gotten off most of my meds except prednisone, which is now up to 10mgs.I thought the hives were an allergic reaction to the med, but now I am not so sure. Can Lupus cause hives?
As far as I know yes it can cause hives. Antibiotics can be triggers, especially sulfa. You should take them without consulting your doctor. As far as I know people who are diagnosed with lupus don’t take antibiotics.
An allergy to sulpha based antibiotics IS a symptom of lupus. Your doctor should know this and be prescribing any one of the newer families of antibiotics available.
