Hi, I'm 26 years old and I have a question about my fertility. Exactly four years ago I was diagnosed with testicular cancer and one of my testicles had to be removed to prevent the spreading of the cancer and to save my life. Instead of that testicle an artificial one was put in place. Now I'm planning to get married and to have kids and I'm very concerned if I'm going to be capable of fertilizing my wife since I have only one testicle. Does that matter and what should I do if it turns out that I'm sterile?

There shouldn’t be any problems with your ability to make children. As long as you have at least one testicle you’ll be able to have children. After the removal of one of the testicles the production of sperms and testosterone is reduced by half. As a result of lack of testosterone in blood the pituitary gland in the brain produces more FSH and LH, or the sex releasing hormones which then have an influence on the remaining testicle to produce more of testosterone and more spermatozoids to make up for the lost testicle. The same happens when a woman loses one of her ovaries – the other one doubles its activity to cope with the loss. So there shouldn’t be any problems with your sexual ability, if they appear it is always recommended that you talk to your physician about it and find the best possible solution to the problem.

What amazes me most about this is how you could go through that whole experience and NOT be told the answer to such an obvious question.
