Miscarriage occurs in at least 10 percent of pregnancies, often between seven and 12 weeks of gestation.
After each miscarriage a surgery was needed in order to remove the remaining of the fetal tissue. Now, women have an opportunity to choose between a surgery and a new medication called misoprostol.
A comparative study was performed in order to show effectiveness of medical management for early pregnancy failure and found the drug to be effective in expelling fetal tissue in 84 percent of the women. The acceptability and complication rates were almost identical.
Dilatation and curettage still remains the standard procedure even though many women welcome the medical management.
