Mesalamine is used to treat ulcerative colitis?

My father suffers from ulcerative colitis for several years. It is not an easy condition and first time it occurred, it manifested with a big number of stools in a day (35), so he ended up in a hospital because of dehydration. Attaks and remissions are taking turns now. He is using Mesalamine now and I would like to know if it is used to treat ulcerative colitis effectively?

Mesalamine is 5-ASA and is used to deal with progressive auto immune conditions of colon, especially ulcerative colitis, Chrons disease This medication has a special affinity to colon and affects the inflammation process caused by the auto immune nature of the disease. With decreasing the inflammation, number of defecations should be lessened (those could be dangerous for electrolyte balance in the organism).
