Hello,
My soon also took a Methacholine challenge test. It’s not painful. It takes approximately 1, 5 hours to pass it. He shouldn’t drink coffee, but he is supposed to drink a lot of fluids. Doctor will also tell you what he should and should’t do. Methachline is a drug that your son shall inhale (methachline has a opposite effect to an inhaler). Methachline has effect of narrowing airways. Every 3- 5 minutes he shall inhale methacholine and then special tests will be done. These testes shall check the resistance to airflow in and out of your son airways, which shall be measured in a body plethysmograph (it’s a special machine). If the tests show that the airways are overly sensitive to the methacholine, your son will have to use a inhaler.
