Looking at its possible long-term effects, it appears that minor depression is not so minor after all. A minor depression is defined as having some, but not all, of the many symptoms of depression ( sadness, apathy,…sleeping and eating disorders ) for at least two weeks.
A new research suggests that those people who were mildly depressed in the past are six times more likely to fall into a major depression. At about 19 % of people with minor depressions in the past were diagnosed with major depression over the next 15-20 years.
Psychologists believe that doctors should keep an eye on the possible patients, and even make follow-up appointments in order to follow their mental health. However, they still don’t know what kind of treatment it would be best for people with minor depressions.
They also recommend for individuals to go to someone, a primary-care physician or counselor, and seek help for their minor depression until they developed into something big. |
