Months without a period: What's wrong?

I am 18 years old and have never really had a regular menstrual cycle. I recently went for 3 or 4 months without a period. I went to the GYN and got an ultrasound, and did blood tests and they found nothing. My doctor put me on birth control and during about the 2nd month of being on the pill I went for a month bleeding almost constantly! After about 4 months of being on the pill, I am no longer taking them. It's been over a month since I've had a period. What's going on with my body? Could this effect my ability to have kids?
