My daughter also started hearing voices at age 6. She's now 8 and still hears them. I am equally as worried.
I also want to encorage the person who responded to your posting by stating"get your daughter off drugs" to become educated and refrain from such ignorant statements. |

We all fall into traps of bad whisperers - at any age, whilst your daughter is a fighter for this unseen negativity already.
Most likely a blessing!
Just look after her until she's matured, you know, the normal way...
May she be guided and used for vast goodness in the future to come. |

my little sister used to talk to someone called tom or something when she was around the same age..
shes not mental..a lil dislexic but otherwise ses ok..
she cant remember it now.. but my family think it was either an imaginary friend, or a ghost of a boy that probably died near there.. it was an old house..
she never complained of hearing voices while she was up and in company of people.. but as soon as she was alone in a room, she would go deep into conversation...
if i believed in the whole 6th sense here, i would say that children are more innocent and nearer to god and angels than us, as we have commited sins..
if newborn babies could speak i wonder what they would say.. apart from "i want food, sleep, or you to change me"... |

Hi Please don't be bogged with those damned replies you are finding out there. Your daughter is absolutely fine and this is very common at her age to hear voices which is of her imaginary friends. When she wants to try out things that elders consider as 'BAD', she will try and blame it on her imaginary friends Although you should not be encouraging her to do the bad things her 'imaginary friends' ask her to do, these imaginary friends often help them gain control and ward loneliness away, its a part of her growing up.

I'm going to provide a psychological answer to your psychological problem.
It is not uncommon for young children to develop imaginary friends. An imaginary friend is something they interact with. It is NOT something that gives them commands.
It is not uncommon for children to hear the kinds of voices you are describing.
Your daughter needs to be evaluated by a Mental Health Proffessional. Recent studies are changing the perception that hearing voices are linked to long-term illness like Schizophrenia.
Children can be educated through therapeutic intervention not to fear that voice but rather to "talk back" to it. At this age she is very impressionable it's highly possible with the right evaluation she won't even remember ever hearing voices. |

Hey folks - I'm no professional but I can provide some better insight than that.... First of all DON'T PANIC. There's any number of things this could be. Yes mental illness is a possibility - that can be something serious or just a common anxiety disorder.
Interestingly I did come across an ACTUAL STUDY that looked at kids with an average age of nearly 13 who hear voices - and it said that only 1/3rd of the cases are actually mental illnesses.
rcpsych.ac.uk/pressparliament/pressreleasearchive/pr363.aspx
there's also this feedback forum where the discussion turned to stress related "voices"
http://www.medhelp.org/forums/ChildBehaviorSupport/messages/473.html
I also don't buy that a 5 year old can accurately convey what "voices" in their head are... just thoughts? a conscience? Imaginary friend?
Professional help is obviously recommended - but keep in mind they don't have all the answers either... every kid is different. |

I'm the early phase of her treatment but she could have BI-Polar/Schizophrenia. Before I would put her on any form of meds do what I'm doing, blood work (Panda's) and have the doctor rule out other disorders and then have them do a brain scan. I had my daughter tested by a neuropsychologist and so I'm on to phase 2. We're working quickly though because she has trouble sleeping due to the voices. Just do your best to not leave any stone unturned before putting her on meds. That's just my suggestion.
