Hi. My mother suffers from depression, but she denies it. How to make her see a doctor? She says she is just fine and she needs no therapy. What to do? Anybody?

Hi. My husband suffers from depression and he is taking antidepressants. Many people think meds are a magic bullet that will solve their problems. But antidepressants can`t solve problems in your lives. I talk with my hubby all the time. I had troubles to make him go and see a doctor. Your mother needs to realize she has a problem in the first place. You can`t help anyone who doesn`t want to be helped. When she agreed to seek medical help, counseling and medicine are the best treatment comb she can get.

What makes you think that she is suffering from depression?

This is a great post. I relied on antidepressants for years but they can only take you so far by themselves. What has gotten me a lot better is learning cbt. Try and find a cbt support group in her area or have her go to the library and read the book by sam obitz which is based on cbt and talks about the ways to overcome anxiety and depression. The excercises work well if you do them everyday and can lead to major changes in your ability to enjoy your life.
