Niaspan 1000 mg............Anyone else on this drug..?
It is used for lowering Cholesterol in the blood. Along with other medications of course. This medication affects me in a way that is extreme, however I have no choice but to keep taking it. The reactions I get from this are a very red face and neck. Hive type reaction on my forearm inners, and a severe burning sensation through out my body. I Take it before going to bed so the reactions are not as severe, now sometimes it awakes me due to the burning sensation. It feels like I am on fire! I get this on and off, I read somewhere that certain foods or juices affect this, but don't remember where I seen it.
So is anyone else on this medication and if so what are your reactions to it, when do you take it and what do you avoid when taking it..?
Thanks for the info, those of you whom wish to submit. |

I also take Niaspan and occasionally experience the hot flash/flushing. And you are correct, it sometimes feels like you are on fire. If there is such a thing as spontaneous combustion, this is what it must feel like! I have found that taking it before bed is best. Also, I found that if I exercised within 2 hours of taking the medication it often resulted in the hot skin flushing later on. Consequently I do not exercise within 2 hours of taking the medication.
Taking aspirin (approximately 30 minutes before taking NIASPAN) or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (e.g., ibuprofen) may minimize flushing. To avoid ingestion of alcohol or hot drinks around the time of NIASPAN administration, to minimize flushing.
The manufacturer has reformulated Niaspan to reduce the flushing tendancy. You can tell if you have the reformulated pills by the color. The old formulation was white. The new formulation is orange.
Oh, and Niaspan is primarily prescribed to increase high density lipids (HDL), which are the good cholesterols. |
