No period in several months- when to restart BC?

I went off of birth control (NuvaRing) several months ago. I have not gotten my period since. (I have always been quite irregular when not on BC) I am NOT pregnant. Do I have to wait until after I get a period to start using birth control again (NuvaRing)? Or can I start back up now (before having gotten a period)?
