I just noticed today that suddenly I have a small black dot (pen sized) on the palm of my hand. There doesn't appear to be broken skin, so I don't think anything got lodged in there. What could it possibly be?

Often thorns end up under our skin, without leaving any visible entrance paths. Here is the way to remove a thorn. If you have been outdoors and believe it could be a thick, don’t try to remove it with your fingers as it may carry a disease. Use tweezers and possibly rubber gloves and try to remove it using tweezers. Once you managed to get it out, you may wish to save the tick for identification in case you become ill within 2 to 3 weeks, but make sure you disinfect the bite site and wash your hands thoroughly.
If it is a thorn stuck under your skin, you should try to milk it out with your fingertips by squeezing over the thorn. If it won’t come out, use clean tweezers, nail clippers and a needle. The needle should be cleaned with betadine solution.
Now, once you have the equipment, take a cotton swab, dip it in alcohol or betadine solution and clean the area where the thorn is. Using the needle, make a whole above the thorn and try to milk the thorn throughout that hole. If it’s not working, try to make a bigger hole. Once you managed to reach the thorn, take it out with a tweezers and again clean the site from which you had removed the thorn.
If you find it impossible to remove it, don’t continue digging. Leave it and see a doctor for help. If it hurts too much, try applying ice to numb the area a little bit.

| Yeah, it definitely helped, though I wasn't outside when I seen it suddenly on my hand. However, I was nevertheless going to lance it after I heard some information. If anything else happens, I'll keep you posted. |

| Well, I got it looked at and lanced it a bit. Due to a bit of reddish hue, they say it's a dead vessel. |
