New study found that if young people use daily dose of fish oil it can reduce their chances of developing schizophrenia later in life. Researchers found that omega – 3 – fatty acids found in fish oil have beneficial attributes for preventing heart disease, ADHD and severe mental illness. This finding may be of great importance since the anti – psychotic drugs used to treat schizophrenia have drastic side effects.

Study lasted for about a year and during that time, one part of participants received fish oil, rich in omega – 3- fats while other part took a fishy tasting dummy substitute. Results showed that 3% of those people who took fish oil developed schizophrenia when compared to 28% of those who took placebo. Some previous studies proved that 12% of people who used anti – psychotic drugs developed schizophrenia.

No matter to this results, use of fish oil is controversial because it has some side effects such as weight gain and increased risk of heart disease. Still, early diagnosis is key to more effective treatment and saving lives.

Omega – 3- fats are found to be of great importance in treating depression, bipolar disorder, rheumatism, heart disease and cancer also with improving concentration in children who suffer from ADHD and autism.
