Hello! My mother suffers from scleroderma and she was diagnosed pulmonary fibrosis a week ago. Her doctor told her that scleroderma presented increased risk for pulmonary fibrosis and that this was practically the cause. She has an appointment at her doctor tomorrow when all other results will be completed and they will decide on treatment. On what depends the treatment of pulmonary fibrosis?

Hello! It is known that diseases such as scleroderma, rheumatoid arthritis, lupus and sarcoidosis could increase the risk for pulmonary fibrosis but the firm connection is not proved. The treatment depends on individual patient’s condition. The lung specialist will determine the treatment. He will monitor the response to therapy with possible side effects. Unfortunately we can’t say that there is an effective treatment or a cure for pulmonary fibrosis. Since some types of fibrosis can respond to corticosteroids or other medications that suppress the body's immune system such drugs are sometimes prescribed in attempt to decrease the processes that lead to fibrosis.
