Optic neuritis refers to swelling or inflammation of the optic nerve. It is often associated with diseases causing demyelination of the optic nerve (a loss of the protective myelin layer of the nerve), but sometimes the cause is unknown. Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the disease most often associated with optic neuritis. Most patients with optic neuritis experience a sudden onset of decreased vision along with pain and soreness when moving the eye. Optic neuritis usually affects only one eye and may be a recurring problem with certain diseases such as MS.The most common problems associated with this condition are pain with eye movement, tender and sore eye, mild to severe decrease in central vision, reduced color perception, central blind spot, fever, headache, nausea etc.Corticosteroids (oral prednisone and IV methylprednisolone) have been shown to significantly increase the rate of the recovery from optic neuritis. Continued use of steroids for around 3 years has been shown to delay the reoccurrence of ON and conversion to multiple sclerosis.
