Department of Health in Chicago reported that over 120 people have become infected after eating at the Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth at the Taste of Chicago food festival. The Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth served a cucumber salad over hummus, a paste made ground chickpeas, sesame tahini, lemon juice, and garlic. Nine of the people who got sick were found to be infected with salmonella bacteria. Ten people ended up in hospitals and some are still undergoing treatments.
Reports of the infections started coming in on Monday morning. By the end of the day, health officials figured the common link was the Pars Cove Persian Cuisine booth. The owners and the workers of the booth are working closely with health officials to find the cause but authorities are almost positive that it is tainted hummus to blame.
Each year, there are over one million reported cases of salmonella poisoning in the USA. The figures are expected to be higher because symptoms of salmonella infection often remind of other illnesses, such as flu. |
