| About two months ago I came down with Strep throat and was given Azithroyicin (antibiotic) as treatment. Within a few days of taking this medication I experienced a mild bout of diarrhea (not uncommon). After the ten-day period on antibiotics, the diarrhea was still evident--though more erratic. When it continued for a little over two weeks, I saw my doctor and after a stool test proved normal took one dose of Imodium AD (which checked the diarrhea). However, I suddenly felt different: I seemed to be fluctuating between diarrhea and constipation; felt a "gnawing" "flutter" in combination with dull ache/pain in my stomach. Since I do have GERD, I attributed the stomach pain to this and switched from my usual daily Priolosec OTC tablet to Nexium 40mg (which is what I do when I've eaten something that's been particularly bothersome to my stomach). I was driving myself crazy trying to self-diagnose and self-medicate the problem I was experiencing so I finally went to my GI guy who took a second stool test (also normal) and who now believes I might have IBS!!! He's asked me to wait a week or two to see if the symptoms have subsided. Otherwise, he's recommending a CT. I've been doing a lot of reading online about my symptoms and recently discovered that it could very possibly be connected to perimenopause. I'm 54 years old and while I still menstruate, it's definitely changing in the number of days it lasts and the flow volume. Coincidentally, I just started my cycle and, what do you know? The symptoms subsided significantly, although I'm still very sensitive to gas. I find that I have to eat small meals (because I feel full almost immediately, even if I'm probably not satiated) and then suffer with painful bloating and gas. I'm really going a little mad with all of this. Can anyone tell me if they're having the same problems? Many thanks. |
