I had psa test 3 days ago. That was my 4 time to have it in last 2 years, which means that I have it regularly, every 6 months. This time doctor told me that I had to have prostate biopsy either. I didn’t ask him why it was needed. What that could mean?
Biopsy of prostate is usually performed when psa level is elevated. Concentration over 4.0 ng/ml usually means that biopsy is needed too. Ultrasound is done before the biopsy and produced images help doctor to guide the needle when removing tissue sample from certain area of gland. Then, tissue samples are examined to check for cancer cells. Mild rectal discomfort and possibly little blood in urine and stool can be expected as side effects of biopsy for a few days.
