I’m interested to get explanation for meaning of PSA levels. My husband has started experiencing difficulties when urinate, he’s 60, doctor suggested him to have several exams to check condition of his prostate. I guess that he can not have psa level like a young man. What is the relatively normal elevation of psa in men his age? Can psa level be lowered?
Psa is produced in prostatic ducts and small amount of it circulates in blood stream. PSA is short for prostatic specific antigen and concentration of this protein is million times higher in prostate then in the blood stream. Psa level rises with age and for men over 60 it is normal to be about 4.5-5.5. In prostatitis level can be elevated up to 30ng per ml, but after the treatment it can return to baseline level within 6-8 weeks.
