I had a total thyroiddectomey and was treated with the highest dose of Radioactive Iodine in August of 2006. In November I notice a pain under my ears when ever I ate food containing citrus acid and now I am experiencing pain daily. My doctor priscribe 800mg of Ibuprofen 3 times a day. Has anyone else experienced this condition after Iodine treatment?

Hi ! I also had a high dose of RAI post thyroidectomy for cancer. I experienced the same pain under my ears, and swelling when I ate most things. What I found out is that RAI can damage your salivary(spit) glands. That is what happened to me. It may get better over time. It took several months for the pain to go away for me but it happens on ocassion if I eat something really dry. I still have decreased saliva production but the pain is mostly gone. I hope it gets better for you!
