When I was diagnosed with mitral valve prolapse I was told that the condition didn’t need any treatment and that mitral regurgitation would not endanger my health in any way. Five months from that time I started feeling irregular heartbeats and palpitations. Are those palps associated with mitral regurgitation? Should I see a doctor about that?

You must consult you doctor about this. Palpitations, extra heart beats, forceful heart beat, pounding heart or heart flutter are among common complications when it comes to MVP. MVP is basically a disorder that does not need any treatment - not harmful at all. However, it is a heart condition and there are possible complications. Your irregular palpitations are perhaps caused by alcohol, coffee, tobacco or even stress. If you think this is not the cause, inform your cardiologist. He will probably suggest annual evaluation of the condition, or, if it proves to be more serious, prescribe beta - blockers (Tenormin, Lopressor or Inderal) in order to reduce the degree of the prolapse. This should help, but as a last resort there is also a surgery. You can be submitted to valve repair or valve replacement.
