After hearing horror stories about Mirena, I wanted to share my experience with ParaGuard, which is a copper IUD that has no hormones (the copper acts as a spermacide). I have been extremely pleased with this product. Insertion was somewhat painful, but the sharp pain lasted only 3 seconds. (I have a low pain tolerance.) I went back to work right after the procedure. I had cramping throughout the day and into the night. The next day I felt great. Before the IUD, my periods were pretty light and lasted about 3-4 days. With ParaGuard, they last 5 days and are heavy enough for me to use tampons, but not overly heavy. My periods are regular. Getting the IUD taken out was not painful at all. If you are having a bad experience with Mirena, you may want to consider ParaGuard.

Hi there, I have not heard very good stuff about copper only IUDs. Can anyone else post on their experiences with this and let me know how it went for you? Thanks!

i would not advise any woman to get a copper IUD.
while your doctor may tell you there are no side effects, there are serious side effects. many women, myself included, have gained weight, suffered from acne they never had before, pains in the abdomen and etc. like myself, most doctors will tell you that should not happen. the reality outweighs anything your doctor or manufacturer may claim.
like many women, including myself, when i complained about pain in my abdomen and constantly feeling like i had to go, a urine sample was taken to check for urinary track infection. of course it came back negative- no infection. but the pain and bloating and weight gain continued. in spite of exercise and carefully watched diet - including eliminating salt and etc.
low and behold, after much internet research, copper IUD allergy can in fact cause urge to urinate frequently along with bloating and etc. the only way to get rid of this side effect is removal of the device.
the fact and truth is, the medical world, including the manufacturer, have no idea what causes the copper IUD to work - other than to state it inflames the uterine lining. doesn't sound like such a safe thing after all now does it? it creates such a toxic environment inside of a woman her own eggs will most likely be killed long before fertilization. and this is supposed to be safe?
the notion that creating a toxic environment inside of a woman is somehow safe for her would be laughable if it were not for the fact that the medical community accepts this and then refuses to listen when a woman states she is gaining weight, getting acne, feeling bloated and etc. and etc. and she is told the copper IUD would not cause that.
and the analogy to a penny - if a doctor tries to pull this one on you - tell the doctor: pennies are 2.5% copper. the ONLY copper part of a penny is the very very thin miniscule plating on it. the rest of it is zinc. so the penny analogy is a load of bull. if you can touch a penny it does not mean that putting a piece of copper inside of you is in any way safe. think of how copper oxidizes in the elements - do you think your insides are any different than a rainy afternoon? of course the copper is oxidizing in there. it is what it does!
this does not even get into the one side effect they will tell you about - more bleeding and cramps. more bleeding - try 20 pads a day bleeding - bleeding through extra super tampons and soaking a pad in one hour heavy bleeding. periods lasting 10 days bleeding and perhaps spotting in between. and this is supposed to be a better option?
don't do it.
