Please tell me what is the causal agent of patua syndrome in babies? Can it be prevented somehow if diagnosed early? Are there more varieties of the syndrome or there is just one? Is it diagnosed by ultrasound?
Patau syndrome is trisomy of chromosome 13. It means that there are 3 copies of chromosome 13 instead of 2. That’s congenital disorder that causes mental and physical abnormalities, especially heart defects. Symptoms may vary, because there may be partial or total trisomy of chromosome. Symptoms are usually very severe and miscarriages occur in many cases. Patau syndrome can be detected by amniocentesis or through the ultrasound imaging. Survival to adulthood is rare in persons with patau syndrome.
