I have been searching the web for some information about my peeling fingers and this is the only website I found that describe some of the same sytoms that I have.
It started about nine months ago I get little circle spots on my fingers then they turn into almost like a callus, really thick and I can't feel, then they start to peel and be very painful, heal and in about two - three weeks they start again. They don't seem to change with the weather. I've been to my family doctor and he gave me a cream that didn't work. I've been trying to see a dermatologist but every time I call to make an appointment they only could see me in two or three weeks and I don't know if I will have the symtoms by then because it keeps going away and coming back.
I change my facial products alot and I know I use some with salicylic acid. I am going to stop using any product with that in it and hope it works. If not I'm going to give the nickel thing a try. I've recently been eating a lot of nuts.
I'm thankful for the advice, information and just to know I'm not the only person this happens to. I will let you know if anything works. |

| I'm going through the same thing right now and nothing seems to work on my hands. It started about 5 years ago as small spots on the tip and side of one finger that calloused over, got tight and numb, then cracked. And it was uncomfortable, especially the peeling. The new skin was sensitive and prone to bleeding. It healed and was fine for 2-5 months. Then it started up again. Now it affects 3-4 fingers on each hand and it's painful. Takes about 3 weeks to go away, I'm OK for a few weeks and it's back. I've been to dermatologists. They gave me all different types of steroidal creams... none work. I would be so grateful if someone has an answer to this. It looks terrible and hurts. |

The tips of both of my thumbs felt numb as if they were coated with a light coat of glue----- then the skin would peel.
I started applying hydrogen prioxide about ten times per day. My thumb tips have now returned to normal. I don't know yet if this is a cure, but it certainly helped me. |

| I am 27 female and my finger tips just started peeling last week. i play guitar a little but not often. I have a five-year old It started with my thumbs first my left then my right. Now only my index and pinkie fingers are unppeleed. No pain it just seems to seperate but not around the nali line its the tips. It turns white and peels. I'm a sculpture and so this is very upsetting. Everything I do and make is focused on my hands. Any care suggestions? I've been using a pumice stone to even out the ragged edges the new skin is a little flaky but not raw or painful. i just want to find a way for this to stop before it does become painful. |

| I have had exactly the same condition for a few years and now my son has started having it too. If I do any dishwashing without gloves it starts up immediately. If I avoid detergents and use handcream regularly the outbreaks are much more seldom |

| I have had the same problem for several years and now my son has started having it too. It happens more seldom if I never wash dishes without wearing gloves, avoid handling detergents in general, and use hand cream regularly. If it gets bad, the only thing that helps is a good cream and bandaids. |

| Use hydrogen peroxide on the peeling area several times a day making sure that HP gets under the nail. I apply the HP with a Q-tip. This works for me |

|

Hello All,
I have just developed the same problem as everyone: skin starts peeling around the fingertips, especially right below the end of the fingernail....eventually leading to the whole of my both hands peeling off.
Im 29, and this is the first time it has happened to me...it barely painful (only when pulling off skin, also its fresh and sensitive skin underneath), and i cant seem to figure out why its happening right now in my life, after 29 years of no skin problems whatsoever...
A couple things i thought worth mentioning: I went camping about 3 weeks ago, and upon returning I got very sick (flu-like symptoms eg:fever, aching, chills, etc)..after getting over that sickness, 5 days later my hands started peeling...I still have a sneaking suspiscion it may be Lyme Disease, after all all these symptoms seemed to pop up after a weekend of camping and getting bit by various evil little bastids. After a little research on the web, i also noticed a small percentage of Lyme sufferers had this skin peeling disorder on their hands. Anyone else? Feel free to contact me at rob_asp(at)yahoo.com |

I am so glad to know others can relate to this...my problem is on my right thumb. My PCP thought it was fungal, but the cream he gave me did nothing. After a few trips to the dermatologist, she has called it "hand excema" and prescribed Topicort ointment (a steriod).
So, here's the trick: apply the ointment at night, and wrap the affected finger with plastic wrap. It sounds (and looks) crazy, but it helps to "drive in" the medication and keep it from rubbing off, and I notice improvement in a few days. She also suggested using a hand protectant during the day such as TheraSeal cream, or something with dimethicone to block out moisture and irritants, which also helps a lot especially in cold weather. Finally, when the skin is cracked it REALLY HURTS there is a product by Nexcare called "skin crack care" that looks like a bottle of clear nail polish. I love this stuff! It coats the cracked area (keeping the raw skin protected and minimizing more peeling) yet it is more functional than wearing a band-aid on your thumb for the rest of your life.
My empathy to all of you...if anyone has other ideas please share them! |

Wow, like one of the last posts, great to see lots of folks with similiar distress, but distressing that none can post solutions. I wonder if any of you experience a puckering of the fingetip skin just prior to the peeling phase - as if you've just gotten out of the bathtub. This combines with numbness on the first digit of the fingers, then peeling begins and the fingers are VERY sensitive. This affects just the touch side of the hand, no fingernails are involved, however it is down to the ring area on both hands now. I am a holistic health practitioner and have been stumped and bothered by this recent ( 3 months) development on my hands.
I had a bout of strep throat 3 months ago, which can trigger finger peeling in susceptible people that usually clears in 1 week - I thought this was my case, but no. I am intuitively feeling this is viral, especially seeing all of your reports on allopathic treatment for fungus has gained nothing. I am beginning oral herbal treatment with Lomatium, Usnea, Pau d' Arco, Lemon Balm, Osha Root, and Propolis Gum, and Red Clover Blossom. Will be taking this 3x a day for the next 4-6 weeks. I am aslo applying fresh aloe vera gel 3x daily. Water definately irritates my hands - no chemical cleaners or soaps in my home. However I am an avid gardener and this summer have not worn gloves while working the soil. Are others out there that are gardners as well? Many viruses are contracted this way. I'll let anyone know if the remedies work. Thanks! |
