Research found that older people who have folate deficiency have increased risk of developing dementia. Study involved about five hundred people in research and followed their condition over two years. People involved in research were older than 65 years. Experts conducted a test to find out if they have dementia at the beginning of the study and one at the end, after two years. Participant also took blood tests to check levels of folate, vitamin B12 and the protein homocysteine. High levels of homocysteine was associated with cardiovascular disease.

During the study it was discovered that in the beginning one out of five participants had high levels of homocysteine, 17% had low levels of vitamin B12 and 3% were folate deficient.

At the end of research results showed that 45 participants developed dementia and it was discovered that dementia was more likely to develop in people who were older, inactive and had low levels of protein ApoE. Results also showed that the onset of dementia was related to participants who had lower levels of folate during a period of two years and higher levels of homocysteine.

Researchers suggest that changes in micronutrients could be related with other signs that forego dementia such as weight loss and low blood pressure.
