Period like cramping more than 2 weeks before period is expected

I am on birth control pills and have been for many years. Recently, I have been experiencing period like abdominal cramps for the past 5 days however my period is not due for another 10 days. The pain is dull and intermintent with occassional very short (few seconds) sharp pains on either the lower left or right side. I've read many posting stating that women felt like this early on in pregnancy. I have not yet taken a pregnancy test. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? Is this anything to worry about?

Some women experience these symptoms around ovulation although ovarian cysts could do the same thing. If it happens again, see your gyn.
