I'm a 21 year old female and I had my tonsils out on August 4th...everything had been going wonderfully until this morning at 6am...I had been able to eat fine, as long as I kept up with my doses the pain was tolerable. It still hurt pretty bad, but like I said, it was tolerable and nothing I wasn't used to. I had even been able to swallow some semi-solids as long as I chewed them up really well. I woke up this morning to something warm filling my throat and no matter how many times I swallowed it kept filling...in my sleepy state I didn't realize what was going on, until something clicked in my head and I woke up and ran to the bathroom. I opened my mouth and blood poured out and just kept coming...and coming...and coming. It finally began clotting and eventually seemed to stop. I rushed in to the emergency room and was told that this is normal when the scabs fall off. Normal?!? Are you kidding me? There was nothing NORMAL about that! I don't know how much blood I lost (or swallowed...which led to a really terrible stomachache soon after), but I can't believe that that much blood loss would be considered normal. We left the emergency room a little wary, but we were told it was fine and that it happens all the time. So now I am at home, terrified to eat, drink, or even move because I don't want that to happen again. It was the most disgusting experience I have ever had in my life and I hope nobody else ever has to witness or feel what that feels like. Has anyone else ever experienced something like this post-tonsillectomy? Is it really normal or are the doctors I talked to quacks? I am scared and want to know if this has happened to anyone else and what I should do...any input would be helpful. Thanks!

if you rinse your mouth with ice water and it doesn't stop the bleeding I would go to a different office or ED. This is what I am being told with my daughter who is having the same thing.
