OMG who would have thought having your tonsils out would be much more hassle! Basically my situation went like this!

I had my tonsiils out on FRIDAY 23RD November!
It took me a long time to come round and it hurt to eat! When they gave me a sandwich i tried to eat it but i couldnt fell it go down! So they gave me some liquid pain reliver and i was fine!
Light headed and able to eat they sent me home!

I was fine and was able to eat solid food from the second i got home! Saturday morning was fine too as long as i took my dose of medicen they gave me!

Untill now TUESDAY! i had no major issues! I woke up this morning with blood on my bed! i paniced and called the hospital! they told me to go down so i did! i was in so much pain i didnt take no pain killers and went straight to hospital! Bad mistake! It turnt out just to be old blood and a lil fresh but damn to swallow was killing me!

they replaced my pills for dissolvable ones! and gave me antibiotics just in case!

IS SOLPADOL STRONGER THEN THE CODINE?!

But i took my pills and i was ok within a hr!

I slept today and omg its the worst thing! i woke up right now and im in sooo much pain! i dont know if its becasue i got a dry thrat or what but it hurts!!!

Is there a way of keeping dehydrated all night?! Not even alll night just after a 2 hr nap?!!!!!!!

Im in da stage of not wanting to go sleep now!!! i would rather stay awake then go sleep and have this pain when i wake!!!

Most of my pain if s on the right hand side of my face! from my ear to my jaw! Anyone else?!

My 4 year old is on day 7. She is eating pretty much everything but chips. The only thing that is keeping her up at night is pain in her teeth and jaw. How much is too much meds? She is up every 2 hours screaming! Would a heating pad help????

My ear pain is what's bothering me now. I am 6 days post of. My doctor said use heat by the ears, near your cheek. I take Roxicet which is liquid Percocet and it works well. I can take it every 4 hours and do still!! Hope this helps. I was also told to eat soft foods as soon as you can to help stretch your throat muscles back. I had scrambled eggs the night of surgery.

I had my tonsils removed on 1/14/08 and it was tough for the first 2 weeks to do anything. Now I'm almost at 3 weeks and still suffer from a mild sore throat and neck pain. The neck pain hurts like hell and all I can think about is where to sit/lay down. If I walk up stairs, walk, or elevate my temperature at any time - I feel very tired. I'm a 26yo male and if anyone has any idea about how long this will take. That would be cool too.

--for those who are in days 1-4 don't eat ice cream. Ice chips, and blue bell bullets(popsicles) were the best. Baby food was edible as well.

days 5-7 ... just survive
get a cold pack for your ear pain and keep the house colder than usual. Sip cold chicken broth and try eating hotdogs-they're soft and give a lot of energy.

I can't stress how much water you need to be drinking. My recovery has sped up after drinking at least 2+ qts of water. I know it's a lot, but just relax the jaw and let it flow down. Don't try to gulp it.

I'm perplexed because I'm at day 18 and it's still a rollercoaster. My friend who was about 22 says it's going to be between the 3rd week and 4th week for recovery.

Can anyone put any weight behind the recovery time?

Crying or Very sad I am f/35 years old and I had my tonsils out on Feb 1st. I am now on on day 5 and all I can say is the PAIN! my throat, my ears, my tongue. This more then I could ever imagined. I hope this gets better.

I didn't notice how little I was drinking until the back and the sides of my tongue started hurting bad. I could hardly talk it hurt so bad the only thing that helps is ice water. And lots of it!

By day two I was eating a little a bit. I have ate some food instant mashed potatoes and it burns the back of my my tongue! and throat. (but they do taste pretty good) Pudding/jello is pretty good to. I've noticed anything salty burns so I gave up on the mashed taters for now. I also found that anything to super sweet burns to. The pudding is o.k. don't have problems with that being to sweet. I tried to drink a warm/hot chocolate it burned the back of my throat from the sugar. Warm green tea with a tad of honey has been working good for me I find it to be more soothing then ice water, but the ice water helped the burning of the back and sides of my tongue.

Each day seems to be the same as far as the pain. Just keep taking the pain medicine a a regular basis codin and vicodin. I haven't experienced scabs yet... I am not looking forward to this, but it means to the healing process is moving along. (trying to be positive about this) I just wish the burning sensation would stop already! It's like I got in a bad fight with the pepper shaker!

I find I do tend to sleep more during the daytime then at nite and I'm lucky if I can sleep more then two hours at a time. Oh yeah and your really in trouble if you sleep with your mouth open!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their stories. It has really helped me cope with this never ending pain. I know I have a way to go yet with the healing process being I'm only going on day 5, but a least I know there is light at the end of this pain tunnel.

I think taking your mind off your throat is very helpful, ex. reading this forum n jus sipping down some nice chilled water/shake. gives you a few hours of nice calm, pain free time.

but one thing i havnt read is about a large layer of yellow stuff in the back of my throat, which i dont kno if its infection or jus the scabbs forming. Or maybe even the burns from when they burnts around the removal area to stop bleeding etc ??
any ideas people ?

Well I am going on my seventh day now. The pain however makes it feel like forever. I still experience quite a bit of pain with my teeth. The ear pain is unbearable at times... makes me cry Crying or Very sad , still suffer from a sore throat of course, and my tongue still burns in the back and on the sides, like someone took a bunch of razor blades to it. Although most of the discomfort I experience now with my tongue is when I wake up from sleeping. Drinking that first sip of water is like drinking razor blades.

The pain is like a roller coaster for me. Sometimes I fell like I am really doing well and on the road to a fast recovery. Then the next hour I am in just horrible pain all over again. I still find myself taking my pain meds every 3 to 4 hours. I look forward to being on day 14 rather then 7 that's for sure.

It would be nice to eat normal again. I have not noticed any change in taste with food so that's good anyways. Still staying away from food that has to much salt or intense sugar because both burn the back of my throat. So bland food works best. Malt-o-meal and scramble eggs is getting old though, but it's about the only torture I can handle swallowing at this point. Although last night I did try to eat boneless grilled chicken and noodles. Didn't go so well, but I tried. Most of that went to the Dogs, well they were happy anyway. Today I will be eating the same diet I'm sure. I tend to eat about once a day it's about all I can take. What would normally take about 5-10 minutes to eat takes about 20-30 minutes and by the time I'm am done and I don't want to eat again for the rest of the day. It is almost exhausting to do.

It is still hard for me to drink liquids... it's always a challenge. It's the thought process... I have to psych myself into it becuase I know it's going to hurt. I am ready for the sore throat to go away now. Warm green tea still seems to work the best for me.

I haven't notice any scabs falling off yet. At least I haven't felt anything in the back of my throat falling off. I try not to look in the mirror to much at my throat just becuase it's gross and it's then I realize why I am in so much pain.

Sleeping has still has not gotten any better. Still find it uncomfortable to lay down in bed so I sleep on the couch instead in a inclined position. I can only get about 2-3 hours at time. Basically all I can get in is cat naps and that's because the drugs finally catch up with me and knock me out. Usually I wake up from coughing and that's not good! that hurts like hell. Then feel like I am going to die again becuase I slept with my mouth open. I do have a small humidifier next to me which I really think does help some with sleeping. Hopefully sleep will get better as time moves on.

Well wishing the best for everyone going through this.

Day 8 wasn't so bad. Getting better everyday a little bit. Ear pain is still there but not as bad as day 7. I take only the codin now three times a day now. Vicodin just makes me feel worse so I quit taken that. The pain left in my teeth and jaw is very minimal to at this point, which makes me happy Very Happy

Sleep has been getting better to. I sleep longer then 2-3 hours now at a time, I now get maybe about 4 to 5 hours at a time, so that's better to. I usually sleep better during the day though. I still have trouble sleeping at night.

My tongue is still little sore in the back but it's getting better to. Still have a hard time eating anything to salty or sweet it burns bad in the back corners underneath my tongue. I have noticed the roof of my mouth is ruff and is starting to hurt slightly I think that is because of the way I have been swallowing liquids and food.

I have been losing some scabs with no bleeding at all so that's good. The new skin exposed however is very sensitive to cold, so Green tea is still my best friend right now. A nice soda pop would be nice! I miss that I'm really not a coffee or tea drinker at all, but that's whats most soothing right now.

Ha, Ha, I thought I would try a piece of strawberry cake it's soft, so I thought I'll be o.k. wrong! burn, baby burn (underneath the back corners of my tongue). So sweets are still out. Although I did sneak down a little chocolate today didn't burn as bad as that cake did. I miss those thing so much even if has been only one week. I ate noodles for lunch and Malt -o -meal for dinner yum. Oh well least I am able to eat something. I thought I would be able to eat more normal food by this time. I can see I definitely have a little more healing to do before I can go back to eating normal food.

I know it's gross to talk about but I never have had surgery before let alone go on a liquid diet for three to four days in a row along with very little food intake. So needless to say stomach cramps and constipation are something else I have had problems with. Hopefully with being able to eat a little better now that will correct itself to.

The weight loss has been nice though, I've lost about ten pounds, I'm sure it won't take long for that to come back my way.

Well the first seven days were ruff for sure but things are definitely getting better each day. It's only gonna get better from here! Very Happy

Well, here I am on day number 11 going on day 12 I still have problems with the left back corner of my tongue. Sometimes when I swallow it feels like there is a web of skin pulling it. It burns and is very uncomfortable when it happens. So I don't understand whats causing that maybe something healed wrong? I go into to my Dr. on the 15th two weeks after surgery I'll see what he says about that.

I do have a hard time trying to drink carbonated drinks they kinda burn going down still.

I am trying to eat as normal as I can. I can can say it isn't at a 100% back to normal though yet. From this point I think it is going to take at least 3 weeks for a total recovery for me. Hopefully by then it will be like it was before I had the surgery done.

I am still taking pain medicine, usually in the morning and at night before I go to bed. That's the time my ears usually bother me, although that pain is much better then it was at first. I have been able to cut way back on the meds so that's good.

In all I really hope this problem I am having with the back corner of my tongue gets better because that is whats making so hard to eat right now. If it wasn't for that I would feeling great.

Wishing everyone a good recovery.
