Happy Valentines Day everyone!

What a journey this has been!

Well going on day number 14 tomorrow already. Feeling a lot better then on days 1 thru 8 for sure. I am though however still experiencing some ear discomfort which is mostly in my left ear. I hope that will continue to get better over time. I go in on the 15th to see my ENT I will talk to him about how long I should expect the ear pain to last.

My throat is still a little sore and there are a few scabs left. I never did experience any bleeding from the scabs falling off which I was glad about. Because my throat is still a little sore, I still talk a little funny to yet. The burning sensation on the back corners of my tongue has almost diminished to now. Thank goodness! I think that was the worst for me. Eating is totally back to nornal now to. My taste is not completely destroyed, but there are some things I've notice that don't quite taste the same as before the surgery. I believe that will get better to in time.

I never thought yawning would be hard to do. Today I sneezed! (ouch!)for the first time to since surgery. I was a little scared to let it go, sneezing is a little hard to hold back on though. It hurt a little bit.

In all I think my recovery has been pretty good. I am glad it is almost over. I do think I had good and fast recovery do to the fact that I made sure that I drank a lot of water/Warm (not hot) tea. I also made sure that I ate some solid foods which not fun at first but I believe that helped to with recovery.

I really hoped I have helped someone else with my experience with adult tonsillectomy. I definitely wasn't a fun experience. The pain you get through it just keep up on your meds. In the end it was the best thing for me.

Well it has now been 24 days since surgery. Very Happy Stills fells a little fuzzy in the back of my throat, but there is no more sore throat! No more ear pain. No more burning sensations with the back of my tongue either. I think the ear pain was just as painful as my throat was at first. I noticed at about day 18 all ear pain was gone along with any burning with the back corners of my tongue. In all I think it took at least a whole month to heal all together. It was quite the experience but differently worth it! and if I had to do it again I would.

My Taste did not change for the most part. The only thing that doesn't taste the same to me is Diet Coke. That's to bad cause I love Diet Coke! Water still tastes better. Maybe that will change over more time it's not such a big deal water is probably better for me anyways.

It is so nice not to have to feel like I have a popcorn kernel stuck in the back of my throat anymore! I suffered from deep crypts and nasty tonsil stones for almost one year. I had it...enough was enough things were not getting better.

So to anyone thinking about having it done. I say do it. It's sucks for the first week for sure, but after the first week it only continues to get better. You won't regret ever getting it done.

Good Luck.

I'm 34 years old, and had my tonsils taken out on the 28th of feb. The Dr. also performed a nasal septoplasty at the same time. I went into it thinking, "Ok, I'm ready! Bring it on!" This was my first surgery ever, what did I know?
I'll tell you what I knew, ..absolutely nothing!!! I told my wife last night that after this pain, I don't want to feel a paper cut! It's like having strep throat. I've been on liquids and broth since the surgery, I don't even want to eat, and when I do get hungry,I just think about having to go back to the hospital if I open up my wounds and I'm like HELL NO! The worst part is I can't sleep! Sleep is GOD'S way of letting us turn everything off for a minute, but when I go to sleep, I wake up feeling worse than I did before! Waking up to a burning throat sucks on so many levels! And now my ears are aching. They feel like being on a plane that's landing, and they haven't popped yet. All I can say is THIS IS TERRIBLE!! I'm taking Xtra strength Tylenol with codeine right now, but is there something stronger? I really need to know. I'm thinking Vicoden, but if anyone has any ideas, please post them.
Thankyou, I'll send some prayers up for you guys.

Crying or Very sad I was expecting it to be terrible and it is!!! I can't sleep as I'm scared to take the stupid tylenol w/codeine which does nothing anyway!! I wish I would be day 14 p.o....I would actually even settle for day 7...this is the slowest process...I never actually thought about how long a week in bed would truly feel like!! As far as eating, I've had sherbert, applesauce, popcicles and mashed potatoes. I can drink water...and that's about it. I had half a glass of apple juice yesterday and a few sips of flat soda. The worst part seems to be my swollen tongue and the disgusting mucous that I can't get rid of!!! If anyone can give some tips on how to safely get rid or reduce mucous I'm all ears!!! Good luck to everyone else who's recovering right now!!!

I have the same mucous problem. I drink even though it hurts terribly, but have to spit out mucous after everything I put in my mouth. I hate to spit, but if I don't I fear I will throw up. I am affraid of dehydration and on day 3 still cannot eat a single thing. Have had to be a trooper through this with 3 kids at home. I have had some surgies and three babies and this tops them all. Did not expect this kind of pain! Good luck to all and the mucous issue would be great if someone could answer it out there.

I am 19, F, and have a very high pain tolerance.

I went into the hospital thinking that the pain would be no worse than strep throat. Boy was I STRONGLY mistaken. When I awoke from the surgery around 11:30 am, I felt fantastic! I drank a whole two cups of water. When they took me back to the pre-op room where my mom was i was doing okay for the first 20 min. Then the nausea came... i threw up ample amounts of blood. I was still out of it for a couple hours but kept throwing up until around 4pm. After a couple popsicles they sent me home. Day one and two were pretty good. I thought to myself... "this went pretty well...no biggy"

Surely enough by night 2 i was nauseated all night from the lortab the doc prescribed. Since i had nothing on my stomach, all that i would throw up was stomach bile and acid. As you can imagine this was no fun on my throat. It felt like someone was taking a knife and constantly stabbing it into my stomach. Not only was it coming up out of my mouth but my nose as well. Since my uvula was so swollen i couldn’t blow out my nose, so i guess i was stuck with bile in my nasal passage. I would sleep for about 30 minutes at a time if i was lucky. After throwing up 3 times that night i thought it was all over. No such luck.

The third, fourth, and fifth day were the worst. It was constant throwing up stomach bile and no pain meds (except Tylenol which doesn’t do much). I also had to take a suppository (those are always fun...) I do have to add that on the fourth night while vomiting, my nose started to bleed and i threw up an old blood clot. That was no fun. I couldn’t sleep because every time i woke up my throat would get dry and it would KILL to swallow. On day three my ears started to hurt. I read earlier on here that someone else described it was drilling holes in my ears and pouring acid down them... that was a nice way of putting it. Crying or Very sad

I am now on day seven and the pain in my ears is starting to go away, with the meds. Day six was the "light at the end of the tunnel" for me. I was able to actually get down a half of a popsicle and some soup broth. I haven’t thrown up since day five and i pray that it was my last. I still have a few scabs in the back of my throat and hope they fall off with no bleeding. I have to add i also havent had a bowel movement in almost a week!!!! As of right now i REALLY regret having the surgery done, but hopefully in a years time i will feel different. I can honestly say this is the worst pain i have ever been in. If you are thinking about having a tonsillectomy, i would think twice before having it done.

Best advice: For the first few days a cold ice pack on my throat helped and when your ears hurt, put a warm wash cloth on them, it helps with the pain.

I am 31, M. I had my tonsillectomy on 17/03/08 at 3.00 PM. I had crhonic tonsilities since my childhood which I wanted to get rid of. My ENT surgeon had the opperation and on first day I had nausea and I threw out blood for two times. I stayed the clinic till afternoon next day. there it seemed that II would be able to go back to my work within a week. I was improving faster. I was able to have Ice Cream, Juices easily. But it was not the end. After coming home I frequently faced secere pain and I used to have Voltalin(50mg) Suppository (diclofenac sodium) twice daily to get rid of pain. I am also suffering mouth ulcers which are playing a major role to set barrier on chewing, swallowing. These are the result of constipation.

Its the 8th day. Meanwhile throat pain has been decreased remarkably. Today I went to my work and stayed there till noon. I back to home and had my lunch properly for the 1st time. But till evening I am suffering from severe throat & ear pain which causes bad headach. At night I could not have my meal and to get relief I took Ibuprofen B/P 200mg.

I dont know when shall I be able to get back to my normal life. But I would like to encourage people to have their tonsils removed if it makes things too complex.

Pain increases while I wake up from bed. Does anyone know the reason?

Hi JNELL, I am on day 7 of mine as well. Sorry to hear you're in pain. The real pain started for me on day 6. I had to get some more powerful pain killers as my ears and throat really hurt whenever I ate. It was to the point where I just had to go to bed and sleep and not move. I think you should get some better painkillers, they make the pain go away almost 100%!
