WOW i am day 8 of my tonsillectomy and im starting to think there is SOME hope... From the second I woke up from surgery I had EXTREME pain in my throat, ears, glands, and tongue. I really think the ears and tongue pain are worse than swallowing. i was on tylenol codeine for the first 4 days which did absolutely NOTHING. i eventually switched to hydrocodone which helped a little. Day 1 and 2 were horrible but I can't even explain the pain of days 3-8. Today I woke up, from only 2 hours of sleep bc thats all i get, and it felt as if i had dried cornflakes lodged into my open sores... WORST pain ever. I dont drink as much as i should anymore... when i do, immediately after my tongue swells, my ears starts pounding, and it feels like someone is stabbing my glands with a knife. I do most my drinking an hour after i take pain meds and i have an ice pack waiting for my neck and a heat pack for my ears
Every four to 5 hours i crush my pills and miz it in some Maalox, that seems to keep my empty stomach as happy as it can get. I had bad acid reflux and gastritis which is probably a blessing in disguise bc id probably be eating the pain meds like candy...
Im hoping from now on i will have a good hour out of the day where the pain subsides....
Did anyone else feel like this on Day 8-9? |

HI KELLYELLIE..thanks for the reply. I didn't think I was going to get a response from anyone. I'm glad I'm not going through this ALONE. Yeah, I do have to get better pain killers. I'm seeing my ENT this Friday. Do you know when we will be FULLY recovered.. and are you speaking funny? because I sure am. |

Yesterday when I saw my doctor he said that the pain should be gone in 2 -3 days. I'm back at work on Monday He also said that it won't be FULLY healed for another 2 weeks! But at least the pain will go away
And yes I am speaking funny sometimes. Like I have to be careful to talk in a specific way to not hurt my throat! Hang in there! |

Hi, Everyone!
My boyfriend is getting his tonsils out next month and they're also "shaving his uvula". I've been reading these posts to see what to expect after the surgery and it sounds like it's going to be pretty unpleasant. I was hoping that someone who has had it done already can answer a question for me... my boyfriend (who has never had any surgery of any kind) INSISTS that he does not need me to take any time off to help him in the days following the surgery. I am only going to be with him the day of to drive him there and bring him home. After reading all of this stuff, I am worried that he might need someone for at least the next couple of days? Am I worrying too much or will he be totally fine without any help? Any advice would be very much appreciated! Thank you!!! |

RESPONSE- FOR COURTNEY18
Hey, this experience has been pretty awful for me.. I can't speak for everyone else.. but I think your boyfriend may need some time off... and someone to be with him the first couple of days, he may be in a lot of pain and out of it, UNFORTUNATELY =[... |

I'm on Tramadol which is awesome on the pain. Although the last dose I took made me throw up
Courtney, your boyfriend will definitely need time off work. At least 1 week! I am taking 12 days off. The medication and the recovery itself makes you extremely tired. And there is some pain, so I wouldn't recommend working on the first 10 days. |

Hey Courtney,
My fiancee was insisting on taking time off to help me out for the first few days post-op but I was having none of that. She picked me up at the hospital a few hours after my surgery (tonsillectomy and uvula shaving)and then stayed with me that evening and eventually went home after I finally convinced her I was okay without her. She did spend time after work with me for the first few days. Admittedly, I seem to have had a much easier experience than most people who post on this board. I didn't need to start taking my pain meds till day 5 or so, and then stopped taking them after day 8 (I still have half the bottle of lortab!). I am now day 21 post-op and have been back to work for a week and eating normally for the last 10 days.
In my case I was thankful for all the horror stories I had read on here cause I was expecting the worst but only had one or two days that I would consider "bad." |

|
|
Ok, everyone has scared me to death. I am about 7-10 days from HAVING my surgery that I really need to have. I am having my tonsils and adenoids take out and also having the new balloon sinus surgery. I do have a high tolerance for pain but now not sure after reading all of these notes.
Can someone please let me know now what the best pain meds are and what foods I should buy at the grocery store before my surgery. I just want to be prepared for the worst and then hopefully it won't be as bad as some of yours. Also, how do you take the meds during the night when most all of them need to be taked with food? The last thing I need to be doing is throwing up with a throat full of stiches.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks |

Hi again!
Thanks for all the responses! Just to clarify something from my previous post... my boyfriend who is getting his tonils out IS taking time off after the surgery. I was just wondering if I also needed to take time off to stay home and help him afterwards. He doesn't want me to, but I was thinking that maybe he will need help, but that he just doesn't think he will. I'm concerned because judging from what everyone is writing, it sounds like it's going to be pretty painful, maybe more than he is anticipating.
cflo--- your response was really helpful... thanks! I hope that my boyfriend has an experience like yours! I guess that means I can stop worrying so much about it and just hope for the best. I am glad to get a guy's opinion- I think my boyfriend just wants to be alone after the surgery (just like any other time he's sick or not feeling good) and it sounds like that's how you are too! Must be a guy thing. I want to respect that and let him do what he needs to do. Thanks for the advice... I feel better. |
