Hi, I'm 67 years old and about 10 years ago I started getting problems with the heart disease. At first it was just angina pectoris but later I got highblood pressure too. My doctor was giving me some medicines to ease the angina and when the blood pressure problem became evident he added some highblood pressure medicines that were doing their job great at first but as the time passed my blood pressure got bigger and bigger. I don’t know what to do, normally I have 170/120 all the meds I was taking don’t work anymore. Why is my BP this high and what should I do about this?

There can be many causes of the highblood pressure that you are experiencing. You said that you are suffering from heart disease like angina pectoris for a longer period of time so I assume that you have high cholesterol levels in your blood. High cholesterol, lack of physical activity and smoking can cause fatty deposits to form on the walls of your blood vessels. All of that contributes to narrowing of the blood vessels, if the veins and arteries are narrower than usually there is less space to hold all the blood so the blood pressure raises. The raise in highblood pressure puts more strain on the heart so in the long run the heart will get weaker and weaker until it finally fails. Also if you have kidney problems, if you have had a kidney infection or other problems with kidneys there might be extra fluids in your body since the kidneys are unable to excrete it so the blood pressure raises as a consequence of extra water in the body. Any of these diseases are a great risk to your health so I really think that it is very important to talk to your doctor for further treatment. Good luck.
