In past few months I have noticed that my prostate has enlarged. I have been to doctor and now I am waiting the blood results. Meanwhile, I would like to know more about prostate. I am little embarrassed by my problem. By the way, I am 59.

You should not be embarrassed, it's a good thing that you went to your doctor. The prostate is a gland size of a walnut. It is a part of male reproductive system. The prostate is made of two lobes, covered by a layer of tissue. It is located in front of the rectum and just below the blotter, where urine is stored. All the functions of this gland are unknown to scientists. However, the main role of the prostate is to squeeze fluid into the urethra as sperm move through during sexual climax. As a man ages, it is normal for the prostate to enlarge. This condition is called benign prostatic hyperplasia, or BPH. The enlargement of the prostate usually does not cause problems until late in life. As the prostate enlarges he layer of tissue surrounding it stops it from expanding. This causes the gland to press against the urethra. The bladder becomes irritated and it begins to contract even when it contains small amounts of urine. This causes more frequent urination. After some time, the bladder weakens and loses his function, the ability to empty itself. It is important to know that the prostate enlargement is a very common part of ageing.
