Prostatitis and expectations (duration)

Hi! I was diagnosed with prostatitis about 1 month ago by a urologist. I was initially put on sulfamethoxazole twice a day, and now after a month, he cut me back to 1 a day for the next 6 weeks. after the switch back to 1 my symptoms have returned in full force.
My questions are this:
How long does it typically take to completely be back to normal after diagnosis and treatment begins?
Should I start taking the pills twice a day to get better faster, or is he trying to ween me off of this so I should endure and stick to one a day?
