New study found that protein called follistatin can be used to combat musculoskeletal diseases including Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Researchers used a single injection, gene – delivery strategy involving FS to treat the hind leg muscles of mice during the study. They found increased muscle size and strength four times higher in mice treated with FS than in mice treated with proteins other than FS. One of the experts also reported that increased muscle mass and strength were noticeable when this strategy was tested using a model of DMD.

Results of the research showed that strengthening effects were also shown in triceps and fibrosis, abnormal formation of scar tissue and a hallmark of muscular dystrophy was decreased in FS – treated animals. Researchers believe these findings can be more helpful than other strategies because it also has ability to reduce inflammation and it has no negative effects on the heart or reproductive ability.

This study represents great importance for treatment of potentially any muscle – wasting disease including muscle weakness which happens due to aging and some inflammatory diseases.
