The four-year clinical trial found that key milk nutrients, calcium and vitamin D may be doing more than just keeping the bones strong. They were found to reduce the risk of cancer in women by at least 60 %. The women who took calcium and vitamin D supplements had 60% lower chances of developing cancer while the decline in women who took only calcium was 47%.

The researchers as well as 10.5 million Americans living with cancer are encouraged by these findings as they may contribute to the new means of preventing or delaying cancer occurrence.

Milk is a major source of calcium as well as vitamin D in the American diet. Most Americans get their calcium from milk and diary products, up to 70% of the nation. Milk is also one of the few food sources of vitamin D, so using milk on every day basis could provide sufficient calcium and vitamin D levels and therefore lower the chances of cancer.

The recommended daily dosage includes three servings of low-fat or fat-free milk. This dosages provides 900 mg of calcium and 300 IU of vitamin D per day.
Previous studies on calcium and vitamin D had similar indications. They showed that these two nutrients may reduces the chances of developing breast cancer in premenopausal women and colon cancer in older women.
