New study found that some antidepressant drugs like Prozac and Zoloft can be effective in treating Obsessive Compulsive Disorder which represents a psychiatric anxiety disorder characterized by a person’s obsessive, distressing, intrusive thoughts and related compulsions which attempt to neutralize obsessions. Results of the study confirmed that patients who take selective serotonin inhibitors have twice as much chances for getting relief from their OCD symptoms when compared to people who take placebo pills.

Researchers said that SSRIs can be considered as effective in treating OCD patients but treatment decisions need to take account of the potential adverse effects of these drugs including nausea, insomnia and sexual dysfunction. During research, experts reviewed about 15 studies and from the analysis they concluded that SSRIs were more effective than a placebo when it comes to reducing OCD symptoms. Results showed that SSRIs were effective 6 to 13 weeks after starting treatment.

At the end of the study researchers confirmed that all drugs appeared to be effective equally but in most cases side effects such as nausea and headache were worse with the SSRIs than with placebo pills.

This really isn't that new of news..

SSRI's and Tricyclic antidepressants are used to treat OCD. However in contrast to treating depression it can take 2-3 months before the person starts to benefit from the medication.

Behavioral Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Medications are the best approach to dealing with OCD.
