Researchers Found New Potential Drug In Treating Prostate Cancer

New research found that some of the ingredients from common fungus Gendarme lucidum could suppress some of the mechanism that are related to progression of prostate cancer. This component was found to has ability to disrupt androgen receptor activity and interrupt the development of cancerous cells.

Some of the previous studies already found that one of the most important functions of fungi is to fight cancer but most of the research was based on the impact of fungi on immune system. Here, researchers tried to explain how fungi fight cancer within cells. This study however was based on low molecular weight secondary metabolites that have the ability to penetrate the cells and act at the molecular level from the cell itself.

Prostate cancer is one of the most common types of cancer among men and it’s controlled by the androgen receptor at the beginning stage of the cancer development. Because of this, all drugs that are used in prostate cancer treatment work to reduce the production of androgens or to interrupt their function trough the androgen receptor. During the research it was found that out of the 200 fungi extracts 11 had ability to reduce androgen activity by 40% and as for the inhibition of cancer cells growth it was found that 14 extracts out of 170 could inhibit the growth of cancer cells.

From all the fungus that were examined it was found that extracts from Ganoderma lucidum were the most effective in inhibiting androgen receptor and in controling the growth of cancer cells. Researchers claim that this fungus could be potential source for the new drug in prostate cancer treatment.
